Classroom Procedures A-Z

Absences

If your child is absent from school, an excuse note is due within three days of the absence in order for it to be counted as excused.

Behavior Plan

I am a firm believer that students can behave in an appropriate manner in my classroom and I expect students to follow the behavior policies we have in place. Any behavior that prevents me from doing my job will not be tolerated. If a student chooses to not follow the rules we have in place he/she will be asked to clip down. Each afternoon your child is asked to record the type of day he/she had and the code(s) to go for that day. Please make sure to sign/initial your child’s agenda nightly so that I know you are aware of his/her behavior for the day.

Birthdays

Parents/guardians are more than welcome to provide a special snack for your child’s birthday; I do request that you let me know ahead of time. Due to Davidson County’s Wellness Policy, these items must be packaged or purchased from a bakery and cannot be served until after the last lunch has been served.

Book Club Orders

Book orders through Scholastic Book Clubs are a perfect and inexpensive way to build your child’s personal library.  You can go online to order and pay or send the order and payment to school; checks need to be made payable to Scholastic and include our class code. Scholastic Orders will be sent home each month and are due on the 15th.

Communication

For my class to run smoothly and successfully there must be open communication. I will do my best to communicate with you regularly through newsletters, phone calls, emails, Remind messages, conferences, progress reports, and report cards. I do request that parents/guardians schedule conferences and do not just ”drop in”. If for any reason you have questions or concerns about the progress of your child, please do not hesitate to contact me. I can be reached after school from 2:45-3:15 at 769 - 2921 or by E-mail [email protected].

Conferences

If you feel a conference is necessary, please do not hesitate to send in a request.

Early Dismissal
If it is necessary to pick up your child early please use the following procedures:

1. If your child requires an early dismissal, please send a note to me that morning. Please include the time your child will be picked up.
2. Report to the office and be prepared to show identification when checking out a student.
3. Someone from the office will send or call for your child.
4. Sign the student out and give the reason for the early dismissal.

Folders

Students will have 2 folders and an agenda . It is their responsibility to return the blue folder and agenda daily. The blue folder will be used as a form of communication. Important information such as school, PTO & county newsletters, fundraisers, permission slips, and classroom newsletters will be send home in your child’s blue folder. The blue folder is also intended for you to return signed documents, absent or transportation notes, money (labeled in a Ziploc or envelop),etc. The second folder will be sent home on Fridays with your child's completed work. Your child has worked very hard on their work, please sit down with them and review assignments and allow them to show you all they learned this week. Return this  Friday Folder on the following Monday.

Grading Scale

100 - 90 = 3

80 - 89 = 2

79 and Below = 1

Homework

Homework will be send home on Mondays in your child's binder.  All homework is due on Friday.

Reading: Students should read EVERY night for at least 20 minutes! This is an essential part of his/her education. After your child has read to you allow him/her to retell what has been read. Comprehension is just as important as being able to read the words on a page. Please record your reading minutes on the reading log found inside the book baggie. Your child will be bringing home 2 books weekly to read each night in a book baggie. Please treat these books with care as they are my personal books.

Spelling words: Each week students will come home with words from the Letterland unit being studied that week. On Friday, we will complete a spelling check that follows the Letterland “rules” from the week. Please practice and review spelling words in any way you wish.

Math: There will be a review math sheet that your child will need to complete each week. The problems will be from work we have done in class and used to reinforce and review the objectives taught.

Lunch

Our lunch is from 10:55-11:25.  Lunch will be eaten in our classroom for at least the first 9 weeks of school. As of right now, there will not be any lunch visitors allowed for at least the first 9 weeks. If this changes, I will be sure to let you know.

Money

Please label all money, so we know how it is to be used, and place it in your child’s blue take home folder.

Parties

Our class will be having two parties this year; Winter Break and End of the Year. Further details will come later.

Snack

We will have snack daily, except on enrichment days due to time restrictions. I ask that snacks be healthy, no candy. I also request that you do not send any snack that has juice in it due to spills.

Supplies

Thank you all so much for all the supplies you have already purchased. We are always in need of colored copy paper, paper towels, dry erase markers, Clorox wipes, and Kleenex.

Tardiness

School begins promptly at 8:00 a.m. and ends at 2:35 p.m. A student is tardy if not in the classroom by 8:00 a.m.

Transportation

If your child ever changes from his/her normal means of transportation, you must send a signed note stating exactly what the change will be. Please remember that your child cannot ride on any bus but his/her own. I am required to send your child home by his/her normal means of transportation unless I have a note.

Thank you for taking the time to read this information. I look forward to working with you and your child this year in First Grade!
